  • A new study demonstrates that contrary to popular opinion, endless personal trauma-mining is actually destructive to our mental health. In our therapeutic age, everything is pathologized, from shoplifting to drug use to having a bad day. Maria Baer joins the podcast to talk about an article she wrote for World, titled “Make Resilience Cool Again.” Maria shares about our culture’s obsession with trauma care, and how we might actually be getting it wrong.

As a therapist, I do think people are being over-diagnosed. I know many people who have spent 10 minutes with a PCP because they were feeling kind of low or a bit anxious. They're sent home with a prescription which oftentimes does not help at all and leads to more medicines. Uncomfortable emotions don't always equate to a mental health diagnosis. At the very least, these folks need more than 10 minutes to figure it out. They deserve that much.

I understand you are a therapist, and hopefully you're different, but my experience is therapists are like the medical system in that they don't actually want to heal the patient but want to deal with the symptoms of the sickness long term. If people got healed how would any money be made?
Not pointing a finger at you and I appreciate your comment here. Just want to point out the system is broken and people are paying the price, figuratively and literally.

I am happy to see you address this subject. As a widow of less than 2 years, I am a bit dumbfounded at other widows and widowers who have been completely derailed & paralyzed in their grief as Christians even after 5, 10 or 20 years! I am coaching individuals and building resilience is the entire premise. (I also lead a GriefShare group which is always my first recommendation.)
I agree that expectations that go unrealized is a huge part of the problem. There are also people, for whatever reason, who enjoy being victims and make a profession out of it. You spoke mostly of young people but I'm dealing with people from 50 to 80, give or take. Why do we think we should be exempt from suffering? I can tell you that physical suffering as a high functioning quad for the past 38 years has matured me in Christ and developed my character like nothing else could. I credit that for being able to process and move forward after my wonderful husband of 45 years passed relatively suddenly. Jesus is faithful in every situation. He is the joy giver and the peace in the storm. He is not a vending machine that gives us what we want. He does give us what we need.

Perhaps some of these people have unmet developmental needs that their spouse helped fill. Perhaps for some others, their spouse had become an idol. It might also be compounded recent grief, such as the sudden loss of several of their peers, family & friends. Lastly, there may be a hidden reason the individuals you speak of are stuck in their grief.

I asked what the trauma was, worried I had missed something. He sneered at me & named the bombing in our city that took 168 precious lives back in 1995.
The problem with that? He slept through the entire thing. He "borrowed" stories from our friends who were first responders. It's dangerous because in my family 's case, he's used this as an excuse to hurt people.

As someone who works in the drug and alcohol prevention and recovery field and heavily involved in schools and social emotional learning, I do worry sometimes that we are creating the next generation to be so hyper focused on their emotions and themselves that we could be encouraging too much selfishness. On the other hand, there are so many kids with dealing with unimaginable traumas in their life, so it’s important to create a balance and not delegitimize serious hurts.

The day I decided to stop being a victim and get out of my head, was the day I got my life back. As a teacher in a Christian school, I have been concerned about how much the world's thinking about "trauma" is affecting our approach to student accountability and discipline. And the example Alisa gave about the guy wanting an audio book--this is so prevalent in education right now. We are not addressing real problems that students have--we are sidestepping their weaknesses and making them fragile in the process.

If we understand suffering as loss of agency, rather than just an experience of pain, it can help us see how we can transcend suffering. I think this is what enabled Paul to be content in all situations. He realized that in the midst of pain and trial, he still had a choice in his response. Similarly, James said we can have joy in the face of trials because he saw the characterological fruit it could produce.

One contributing factor to parents being overprotective of their children is car-dependence. When towns and cities are designed so that cars are the only practical way to get around then they become less safe for children to play outside (both due to the increased number of cars and the lower number of "eyes on the street"). And in such an environment children don't have the option to go places by themselves, which makes it impossible for them to begin learning how to be independent until they are old enough to drive. This has a lot of impact on the way children are raised and seen. If the only options to give your children something to do when they aren't at school are activities at home or driving them to a supervised activity that's going to make everybody in that society view children as more infantile than they would be in a society where there were other options.
This is obviously an entirely separate factor to the ones you were discussing in the video, but it certainly reinforces the factors you were talking about.

Very interesting comment at around 51:12 about teaching our children to modulate their behavior. I remember disciplining our young daughter when she had developed a pattern of, what I called "passive rebellion". Her behavior was so passive that I was confused about how to proceed. After discipline, I heard her singing in her bedroom! She was actually happy! Proverb 25:28 is true: "He that hath NO RULE over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down and without walls." Maybe too much liberty makes us more rebellious and sad. Thank you for making me think......

At the end of the Breakpoint weekly podcast this week Maria recommended listening to her conversation with Alisa. What a relief to hear this. I keep hearing about trauma informed therapy and fearing that I have suppressed something which might explain years of battling depression, anxiety and an eating disorder. At the same time, I feel terrified about what I might unearth. In the 90s my sister became convinced that the reason for her severe mental illness was a repressed memory of abuse. With the help of a counselor and peers she concluded that our dad had abused all 7 children and we had repressed the memory. It wasn’t true but so much pain was caused. When I worry about some repressed memory being the key to solving my problems my counselor has always said that we are responsible for what we do with what has happened to us. This is a blessing to hear this. I can focus on getting better and let go of probing for trauma, thank you.

Totally agree, especially the last comment about keeping a sharp mind, a soft heart, and thick skin. I as an adult because I'm a baby boomer and it wasn't known that well when I was young, was diagnosed with ADD. At the time ADD and ADHD for two different diagnoses, however for some reason they've lumped them together but that's another story. I will tell you that yes it is much easier to listen then to read, because we tend to go back and forth repeating sentences and take forever to read a page. However if you can listen and read at the same time that's even the best. It is what I do with my Bible app. I read along as I'm listening. Actually that technique is best for everybody. Now when it comes to something that needs to be read, but does not have anything audible to it, of course I press on and read through. What helps me is to read aloud on that happens, and if I'm in a place where I can't read completely allowed then I whisper to myself. All of those techniques help a lot. I served 20 years in the Navy so I can't speak for other branches but all the way from the beginning in boot camp we are taught emergent mitigate planning. Some civilians would see us as OCD, but it is not. Basically what it means is to look at everything in everything that you are doing or that's being done around you in the big picture. Look at what effects what, and what is necessary and what is not. It would take forever for me to explain everything but that pretty much sums it up. And guess what, it's totally normal and actually healthy. Us veterans wish everyone would think that way, lol. It's another way of saying live on purpose, except in our case in the Holy Spirit with Christ. In the military by the way, we all go through boot camp and there is a lot of suffering involved, and it is on purpose. Suffering can strengthen, and suffering can be on purpose. Ask anybody who's been through boot camp, survival school, a gymnast or any other athlete, and they will tell you suffering is on purpose and is for your good. The thing is is you have to allow God to use it.

I agree it's too much of a focus. I said something once in a meeting where I worked (at a social services agency). We were doing a trauma informed training, and I said something about teaching resilience and not focusing on people as 'victims' of their trauma. The room got quiet, but a few people nodded their heads. I tend to think it's an overcorrection from the past when trauma was swept under the rug, so now there's this extreme focus on it. I pray it will course correct and we can understand the role trauma plays but not get too entrenched in it as our identity. Jesus heals us from this and we grow stronger in Him. Thank you for this video!!

I’m just watching this here and now and it truly hits home in a lot of ways… it’s something I’ve been thinking on this week and the thought that keeps coming to mind is that we need to be able to speak about, identify and talk about feelings including those that result from trauma, but those feelings should not be at the steering wheel of our lives. Feelings are continually changing, they are wonderful and unreliable. We need to embrace them with intellect and a biblical view and the heart of God

There’s a difference between acknowledging and hyper focusing. I would say the majority of the people who are acknowledging their trauma don’t fall into the second category. And there’s enough shame around healing trauma to begin with. I hope you truly tread lightly with this subject as there’s a lot of brave hurting people who are strong enough to acknowledge and face and deal with what they’ve been through, and that’s more resilient than anything I can think of. ❤

Exactly. Facing the trauma & working through it requires a tremendous amount of courage & strength. Running from it & avoiding are the destructive alternative. Not sure that in the process of dealing with it that you are necessarily hyper-focusing on it. Healing trauma is a process & part of that is awareness in what is happening to you in the process. Short term it may seem like hyper-focusing, but the long-term goal is healing to the point that one can function & move through life in a healthy manner.

I wasn't in the least bit worried about the disease itself. Life went on as normal in our house. I didn't wear a mask. I didn't run out to get jabbed so I could travel or go to a restaurant.
But it was the government response and overreach that affected me powerfully.
I could never just shrug off the whole event and laugh at the fact I could have food delivered to my door when people were being forced to get the jab to keep their jobs. When the enitre economy was ground to a halt and many businesses had to close for policies that I knew, at the time, were ineffective at best (and evil at worst), which is pretty commonly known now.
Granted, I am in Canada, and things might have been worse up here, but even in Alberta, Canada's Texas, there were attempts to force compliance and my business was harmed badly for over 2 years.
Not sure where Alisa was through all of this, but apparently she did not have a business that was affected the way mine, and thousands of others, were. Nor was she compelled to get the jab to keep food on the table.

We’re saying then that people don’t share their trauma don’t experience mental health issues? So we’re going back to keeping trauma in the closet? Talking about it isn’t ‘processing’ it. I’m a trauma therapist who has worked hard to help the church see the Autonomic Nervous System impact from trauma. So much to say. I hope this doesn’t send 10 years of effort down the drain. Love your work Alisa. This is concerning even tho I understand the social contagion of living in your disorder. I suggest we remove the word disorder from everything because we’re all impacted and managing our earthly suffering in different ways. I refuse to give up on the Church as it relates to trauma.

Honestly, I didn't agree with the methodology of the guest. Romanticising letting kids walk the streets until the lamps go down is not wise. Romanticising "letting kids suffer" needs more qualifiers. I was abused several times simply because I was not under the watchful eyes of my parents- simply because it was normal for parents to let their kids run amuck. I don't care if my kids hate me because I don't let them run amuck without me. I care that they aren't damaged by offenses so severe they could call for a death penality in old testament times. I will not let them suffer for my lack of care. You don’t have to let your kids suffer immensly to prepare them for suffering later in life.

I can't even watch this video. The first 2 minutes said it all. Judging people with trauma is not a Christian thing to to. We are called to forgive each other for our faults. And understanding that many people's behaviour stems from previous abuse in their life only helps us to forgive each other.
Videos like this are not helping spread the gospel and only harm people further. When you are in the middle of a PTSD flashback you can't just "be resilient".

What is being referred to here is a pop cultural trivialization of psychological terms & issues. An example would be the way both narcissism, & OCD have been commonly used in conversations to describe eccentric & or selfish people. As we know, narcissism & OCD are valid clinical diagnoses highly descriptive of the individuals who have them. What is awesome is that clinicians & researchers have come a long way in terms of their understanding & treatment of the effects of trauma on the brain & the body. We're fortunate to be living in a time when therapeutic interventions have progressed so that trauma recovery is accessible & available to those who need it. Even though a person's description of trauma might not be our personal experience, or match our definition of trauma, let's not diminish it, as they may just have begun to speak of & explore it. We might not be the persons to listen their story, perhaps we can point them to someone (preferably professional) who can. Real trauma exists, even though it may not be our personal experience, therefore we should avoid succumbing to the popular conceptions & misapplication of trauma.

It doesn’t preclude their ability to read…it’s the long, focused task that is a challenge. They stuff it down with food, they distract themselves with social media they even turn to addiction to avoid dealing with their pain. Whereas in Scripture we see Jesus agonizing over his coming suffering and death and asking the Father if he could let this cup pass from Him. He was expressing all of his emotions to the Father! For a Child of God, Jesus Christ took on our greatest trauma. We cannot view ourselves as victims of trauma, but rather overcomers of trauma through Jesus Christ. Instead of focusing on our trauma, we should focus on the trauma awaiting those who are not Children of God and point them to the truth.
The focus on trauma is also being used by progressives inside the church to promote contemplative prayer. It creates a victim mindset and takes them out of the Word and away from God. When you live as a victim, you can be controlled. Make them believe they are a victim of trauma, tell them to focus on breathing and clearing their minds of all thoughts, teach them wrong doctrine, they have no discernment and believe the false doctrine.
